2008

The new millennium saw the explosive growth of Charles County and to meet the demand Charles County Department of Emergency Services was formed mostly from Paramedics trained in CCMICU.

2008 saw the addition of the first paramedic ambulance to the CCMICU fleet and a Basic Life Support Division was added to create a full service organization with the highest National Registry standards and NAEMT training site.

For the last two decades the spirit of volunteerism has continued to thrive in CCMICU and after an initial reduction in size the Medic Unit grew to become the robust and active company that it is today. We continue the proud tradition of selfless service to our community and remain the only Volunteer Company in Charles County with an Advanced Life Support Charter staffed by unpaid volunteers.

A  building  committee  was established to start the plans for a new building for the MICU to operate from. In 1993, the county offered and deeded a 1.6 acre track of land, behind the county well on Billingsley Rd, to the MICU.  A basic building design was developed and work was started to obtain the zoning and permits required to put a building on the new site.

The search for an architect was ended in July 1994, and work was started on developing a set of plans that would be bid out for the construction. In June 1995, the architect was released and CMI Construction Company was contacted to develop plans for the building that the MICU had in mind. CMI presented their proposal in September 1995, which was accepted by the MICU membership.

The new station is approx. 5772 sq ft,  housing at least three vehicles, two bunk rooms, four offices, kitchen, control room, a large meeting/training room, day room, large lounge area and many other pertinent features needed for the day to day operation on the MICU.

1990

Medic One continued to operate out of the Waldorf Rescue Squad building at 1069 St. Ignatius Drive with two units, until March 1990, when they relocated their quarters to the building on 4506 Printers Courtt in the DeMarr Industrial Park off of DeMarr Road. A third unit was approved in 1990 and the new quarters were dedicated on September 30, 1990.

The Waldorf Rescue Squad, moved into a new building in the St. Charles development along with the Medic Unit. After 12 months of continued service, the unit had run over 1,800 calls and driven over 35,000 miles.  In 1980, the Chevrolet Medic Unit had driven over 87,000 miles and was replaced with a new Ford Station Wagon.  There were now 29 active CRT’s and 60 EMT’s operating Medic One. In 1984 the first Chevrolet Suburban was obtained as a second unit.

The Charles County MICU program placed in to “active” service, to run on all trauma, trouble
breathing, heart and stroke calls, allergic reactions, and the like, with the County’s rescue squad ambulance5. The first Captain of the unit was Jesse Cox, Jr.
